UNESSA is a federation of charities and non-profit organisations. Our members are organisations operating in the shelter, support, care and assistance sector. Our work spans Wallonia and Brussels.
Our diversity is our strength, and the cross-cutting nature of our federation gives us a broad vision of the non-profit shelter, support, care and assistance sector. Our mission is to provide support, to help people live independently and to improve quality of life.
UNESSA spans seven main non-profit sectors:
Early childhood and school health promotion services
Youth support
General hospitals
Occupational integration and the social economy
Services for the elderly
Services for people living with disabilities
Mental health
Our federation also includes charities and non-profits operating in other sectors, such as family planning, home care and pharmacies.
At UNESSA, we provide an enabling environment for our members to grow and develop their shelter, support, care and assistance services.
We represent our sectors and stand up for our members’ interests. Each and every day, we defend their working environment and the future of the 60,000 people who work for them. We make their roles that little bit easier.
We promote the nurturing of new professional practices across our network and encourage our members to develop new projects and services. We champion social, technological and organisational innovation.

Barka is an NGO that was created in response to the growing social problems of the transition period.
Barbara and Tomasz Sadowscy, the founders, wanted to create environments, social structures in which “forgotten and undesirable” members of Polish society would have the opportunity to develop personally and socially.
Barka has resulted in the creation of an alternative support system that brings together people belonging to socially neglected groups, allowing them to rebuild their identity, their global education and to find themselves in a new socio-economic reality.
Barka’s leaders and residents are involved in addiction prevention activities aimed at young people in the Pobiedziska village.
In August, we met in 6 villages community centers – we did fermentation experiments, we used alcohol in chemical experiments. But we also talked about the damage that alcohol abuse can do to our bodies and families. We also talked about the fact that addiction is a disease. The problem of alcohol availability, lowering the age of consent to “drinking” and not understanding how ethyl alcohol works on a biological level were part of our meeting. So generally we talked about the problems of young people related to addiction using the knowledge of Barka’s experienced leaders.

Afev is a national association recognized of general interest since 1991. It mobilizes thousands of students every year to support young people with academic difficulties and create links within working-class neighborhoods. At the same time, the solidarity engagement platforms, located in partner universities, promote the solidarity commitment of students and the link between university, students and territory.
